Tardy sweeps are meant for students to get to class on time, but for many students at Armijo High School, they feel more stressful than helpful.
Tardy sweeps are when administrators play a song on our speakers which can sometimes be a little noisy and distorted. They do this to have students make it to class on time and not have as many kids out of class wandering around. Students who are late to class are sent an email depending on how many warnings they already have depending on the punishment. The 1st warning is just letting you know to try and get to class more on time, 2nd warning is a message home to parents, 3rd warning is a lunch detention and contact to parents, if you fail to show up to first lunch detention after school detention and even Saturday school can be done.
“Tardy sweeps can be over done sometimes …there are times where I need to use the restroom, but by the time the line moves the second bell rings, and I’m late to class,” said Gisselle Botello, an 18 year old senior at Armijo.
Many students say that instead of a tardy sweep helping and getting them to class faster it kinda slows them down and creates more problems during the passing period.
“No, they usually make me take my time more because i dont feel like it really affects my pace, not like it makes me want to run to class or anything.” Botello said.
Other students also mention day to day situations like stress, distractions or needing a break between classes can make it harder to get to class on time, especially when tardy sweeps are happening so frequently
“When there are days where I’m just not feeling okay… or just stressed… it takes me longer to get to class” Said Diana Camarillo a 17 year old senior at Armijo
From an administrative perspective, tardy sweeps are meant to encourage responsibility and make sure students are in class during learning time
“Depending on the event you cannot have more than 10 tardies for a football game and no more than 20 tardies for a dance like homecoming” said Ms.Teresa a typist clerk involved in attendance policies at armijo (does tardy sweeps)
These rules show how attendance and tardiness can impact more than just class time, affecting students ability to participate in any school activities.
“If you have a certain amount of tardies or absences… you will not be able to attend” Ms. Teres said.
Even though tardy sweeps are meant to improve punctuality, many students feel like they come with downsides that make school more stressful rather than productive.
I would describe tardy sweeps as annoying,,, it just adds more stress getting into class if anything.” Camarillo said.
Some students also point out more physical factors on campus, like crowded hallways or the long distance between classes. They say this all can make it difficult to get to class on time, regardless of tardy sweeps.
“Sometimes classes are too far and we cannot make it on time because people love to walk in
groups, walk slow and take up a lot of the hallways” Botello said
Despite criticism, tardy sweeps can still have some good benefits such as reducing overall tardies and encouraging better time management
“I think they can be fair but they’re not enjoyable.” Botello and Camarillo said.
