Credit recovery methods like summer school being removed in the FSUSD district for every grade except seniors can make graduating harder for a lot of students.
Summer school was a great way for students of all grades who were falling behind to catch up and graduate.
Demaria Harge expressed concern saying “I feel like that’s not right because freshman year was a hard year and especially if your taking a language it’s hard to pass those” His common concern among other students was shown, especially for first year high school students, having to learn a new language as a requirement and having harder classes overall. Summer school was like a support system for them rather than just a second chance. Without these credit recovery programs, this could increase stress for students who are falling behind.
Demaria’s statement conveys the fact that removing these credit recovery programs can do more harm than good.
Demaria states “My main concern is that some students won’t really have a way to catch up if they fall behind. Not everyone learns the same way or at the same pace, so taking away summer school could make it harder for some people to graduate on time.” He expresses his thoughts about how it might make it harder for students to graduate on time. Without flexible options like summer school or the after school program, students will have a hard time recovering credits. He suggests that this change could create additional pressure on students who are already facing challenges, ultimately making the path to graduation more difficult and less accessible for many.
He suggests that this concern also points to a larger issue, as it can put more pressure on students, which could make their path to graduation more difficult.
This could also mean that students who failed will have to take the same class again, as Demaria says “ Some students might have to retake classes during the regular school year which could mess up their schedule. It might also make it harder for them to take electives or classes they actually want.” This shows the concern about students who might not be able to take a class they want cause they have to retake one from last year, messing up their schedule. This could discourage students or feel less motivated if they have to take a course they are not interested in. This all could happen just cause they failed to pass a class last year or semester.
Credit recovery programs can be a huge problem to students who aren’t seniors. As Demaria says “ summer school was a way for them to catch up or fix their grades. Without it they might feel like they don’t really have another chance to improve, and that can make school feel more overwhelming for them”
