Far from Home: Getting to Know Bao
Bao Chau Vo has come to the United States from Vietnam. Because he can’t speak English, the interview was done mostly via Google Translate, which is one way to communicate with him.
Vo described his hometown as great, but admitted that he left Vietnam because he had to immigrate; his aunt assured him that it was the best choice.
He moved to America with family on September 15. While he liked his hometown, he shared that what he missed most was his friends. “I do not know how long before I’ll have to go back, especially when I do not know if I’ll know what to do or not,” he said. “Because the moment I go there, it might be gangs, or school might be the same as before.”
“I really want to go to college. However, I have never dreamed of anything beyond that,” said Vo.
Despite his limited English skills, Vo has a lot more to share. Google Translate is one way that other students can learn more about him.
