Far from home: An Italian in America
Marta brings a touch of French culture to the Armijo campus.
Marta Mainardi wanted to have an adventure, one that she couldn’t have in her home country. Mainardi came all the way from Italy to California on August 10, leaving behind her family in Italy, so that she could experience the culture of the United States.
Mainardi is from city in central east Italy called Ancona, but currently lives in Fairfield. “So far I like it here, but I do miss Italy a lot,” she said. This is her last year in high school, but she plans to return to Italy for good at the end of the school year.
Mainardi said that she still isn’t sure whether she likes America or Italy better since she has only spent a couple of months in California, but she is discovering things and, so far, she likes both countries. The United States has a lot to offer, but there is one area that she feels falls short. “I really miss the food from Italy,” Mainardi said. “The food from here can’t compare to the food over there.”

Their coordinated shirts, painted by ASB officers in the past years, become a highlight of the event as students stop to take photo with them.
