Look out a window and watch for the birds!

Birds are a very common animal to find almost anywhere in the world. Just like any group of animals, there are different species of birds that come in all shapes and sizes. While it is hard to know every single type of bird, because scientists believe that there are roughly between 9,000 and 10,000 species, there are a few common birds that we recognize from school, cartoons, and visiting places where they inhabit. For some people, they take care of birds in their homes as pets.

If you’ve ever been to the beach, you might see some seagulls. But around a large city, you might find pigeons looking for food. Growing up, some iconic characters you might have seen are Donald and Daisy Duck. Even around the neighborhood, birds fly around looking for food. Some flowers and plants attract birds, which might be why you see birds always around them. These birds become part of our everyday lives, whether we acknowledge them or not.

Many authors also use birds as symbols to better convey their message. You may recall that doves usually symbolize peace, while owls are wisdom.

If you’re interested in adopting a bird, the different flora that attracts them, or how they are used as symbols, you should read the many stories by The Signal writers. Personally, I found it very interesting to learn the science behind how birds are able to fly. Check it out!
