“Yesterday Cross Country had our League Championships at Lagoon Valley Park. The Armijo team has been quite small over the last few years and we were missing several team members yesterday due to injury but those who ran competed well and had some amazing results.
In the Frosh Soph races our standout performers were Sophomore Kyle Durano who improved by 2 minutes over his time from last year and completed the 2 mile course (with hills!) in 12:37, which was good enough for 10th place (he would have placed 4th last year!). On the girls side I want to highlight Freshman Melina Smith who managed to improve her time by over 4 minutes (!!!!!) from what she ran on this course just a month ago. The rest of the team averaged an improvement of about 1 minute from what they ran a month ago so to see a 4 minute improvement is insane.
In the 3 mile Varsity races we were bitten by injury the hardest. You need 5 members to field a full team for team scoring purposes and we were missing athletes on each side who would have helped us meet that goal. On the girls side we had our top performer of the day, Sophomore Jessica Lundberg who in her first year of running varsity managed to place 6th in the league in a time of 20:32 and earn one of the Coveted All-League Spots. She would have been joined in All-League honors by Senior teammate Lilian Luu but she had to pull out of the race due to injury. On the boys side I want to highlight Junior Santiago Montar-Ortiz who managed to improve his time by 3 and a half minutes from his first race on this course just 1 month ago!
If you see any of the members of the team please congratulate them on a job well done. We have one more guaranteed race, Sub-Sections at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds (Frogtown for those who know) next Saturday so the season is not yet done but we have officially entered the postseason and they will now have to qualify to continue moving on.”
