Talent can take runners far, but sometimes luck gets in the way.

The Armijo track season has come to an unfortunate end after the Masters meet on Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20.

On Friday, the Royals Boys’ team had their season end when our relay team of Treveon Henderson, Deonte White, Jesse Reid, and Evan Wortham failed to make the finals of the 4x400m relay. Wortham ran well in his 200m and 400m races, but also did not make the finals.

The Girls’ 4x100m relay team of Cierra Kinsey, Ani Kinsey, Sanai Wilson, and A’Jah Parks made the finals, qualifying with the 5th best seed time after a poor run but a bad handoff on Saturday meant that the Royals were unable to fight for the top three spots needed to advance to state, finishing 6th overall.

In the mile, Luu qualified by running a 5:20 mile but caught the flu on Thursday and was only able to run a 5:39 in the race, finishing 22nd.

Finally, Cierra Kinsey qualified for the finals in both her individual races, the 200m and 400m, but died off on the home stretch of the 400m, falling from 2nd to 6th by the finish and Armijo scratched her from the 200m.

Not the ending the Royals wanted for the seasons but it was a fantastic journey for all of the athletes and the entire coaching staff could not be prouder of the kids. Please congratulate them on even qualifying for the meet as it shows they are some of the best in the area and most of them will be back next year to try and improve. Cierra Kinsey will also be signing with a college soon so keep your ears open for when we make the official announcement!
