A future for introverted students
College Focus – Bates College
Bates College is every introvert’s dream.
Introverts are like devices: they need time to recharge after use—or in this case, social activity. If you are an introvert, Bates College is the perfect college for you.
Bates College is a private Liberal Arts college in Lewiston, Maine. In addition to its small student body – it has fewer than 2,000 students — the small classes also allow students to connect with their classmates and professors. The student-to-faculty ratio is 10-to-1, where students work one-on-one with a faculty member for their thesis.
Bates College is one of the more selective Liberal Arts colleges with an acceptance rate of only 14%. According to U.S. News & World Report, “half the applicants admitted to Bates College have an SAT score between 1210 and 1420 or an ACT score of 27 and 33. However, one quarter of admitted applicants achieved scores above these ranges and one quarter scored below these ranges.” (https://bit.ly/3uMmN8o)
At Bates, you can study a major, a major and a minor, or a double major. But what attracts students to the college is the academic flexibility. Students can design their major or enroll in the Dual Engineering Program, and study for three years at Bates College, then two more at prestigious engineering schools like Columbia University and Dartmouth College. You can take a deep dive into the 36 offered majors and 26 minors here: https://www.bates.edu/academics/.
However, this pales in comparison to the fact that the student experience at Bates College is comparable to a “make your adventure.” The college prides itself in offering its students as many opportunities to take charge of their education as possible. Did you know that 60% of their students study abroad in 80+ countries? Also, Bates’s research
programs give students a chance to make an impact. Their Purposeful Work Internship Program matches students to specific employers and financially supports them. Students discuss and present their research at the student research festival, or the Mount David Summit. And that is only the tip of the iceberg.
Are you ready to start your adventure at Bates College?
“For a second, I was thinking that I might write 5 articles this time. Then I reminded myself that I'm weak and can't handle it.”
