Sharing the wealth with readers
Scholarship editor – Valeria Perez
This marks my third year as a part of The Armijo Signal. This year I am serving as the Scholarship Editor, but it isn’t my first editorial position.
I originally joined journalism as an elective class in my freshman year. At the time I didn’t think I would be coming back as a writer or editor. However, I was offered the position of Contest Editor for the 2020-2021 school year and, after a lot of consideration, I decided it was worth a shot. I’m glad to say that it was definitely worth it.
The reason I joined journalism was to gain experience and practice with writing. I know that in life you’re going to have to write many important things, so it would be a very crucial skill to practice. I think being a part of journalism has made me improve with discipline and communication skills which help in the long run. Being part of The Armijo Signal allowed me to learn about new things that I never would have heard of without the research I had to do for stories.
I would like to include that it does come with certain obstacles, one of which is sometimes having writer’s block. On the flip side, when you overcome this writer’s block you would have stimulated your brain and could have come up with more ideas.
In the future I hope to apply the skills I’ve gained in everyday life, whether it’s writing a college essay, working on a school assignment, or even journaling.
