Moving toward unity in the community
Editorial – LGBT History Month
October marks LGBT History Month! While you might have heard of Pride Month in June, LGBT History Month is dedicated to the observance of the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements.
This month is especially important to raise awareness of LGBT people and history by recognizing historical icons that have had an impact on the fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, etc. That way, we can have a happier, safer world with little prejudice.
While there have been many momentous events, such as passing laws for better treatment, that have led to a better present, it’s not enough until the community feels safe. Because of the hate crimes that have been happening around the world, members of the LGBTQ+ community have feared for themselves and their loved ones.
While it might not be at the forefront of your mind, it is essential to remember to be open-minded so that people in the LGBTQ+ community don’t feel like they are being sidelined or forgotten. We have a guide that you can read to learn about the terms you should know to show support towards the community. There are also articles about historical figures who have changed the world of those in the community for the better.
If you are looking for help understanding the LGBTQ+ community, there are so many support groups, including The Trevor Project and others that can be found at ChildWelfare.gov.
You can also learn more about National Coming Out Day with the Human Rights Campaign, a National Day recognized on October 11.
Have fun taking a look at some of the stories we’ve prepared and learn to become an ally!
