Located only within the Bay Area, Project Avary is a program for children from the ages of 7-18 who have lost the presence of parent(s) due to incarceration. Many children are affected emotionally, financially, or even physically from this situation. This program provides aid/care for these children as much as needed.

“I decided to be a part of the change,” said Mariah Walker, who has been a part of Project Avary since she was seven years old and grew up within the program. She has introduced children to not only Project Avary but other programs as well. “Most children deal with behavioral issues within school or at home. They don’t have that mother or father role in their life to guide them.”

Many children don’t have a parent to guide them through specific issues so they aren’t knowledgeable on how to do certain things. Some children do not have a support system in their home life, either, and this is definitely needed through the tough times. “Having support from other kids like me really helped me,” said Walker. “Knowing that there are people here for you especially people who can relate to your situation can really help you get through tough periods of your life.”

Overall Project Avary has helped many children, including Walker. “You build long lasting relationships with people who have gone through the same thing as you,” she said.
