Why is Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj so important?
From current world events to the economy, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj tackles controversial topics in an entertaining and easy-to-understand format.
Since the 1st episode of 40 aired on October 28, 2018, The Netflix Original show captured the attention of thousands and thousands of viewers. It received a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Motion Design, a Peabody Award for Entertainment, and two Webby Awards.
It was—and still is—highly praised for its unique formal. Vox supports this, stating that, “of all of the late-night programs and talk shows currently airing on any network, from broadcast to cable to streaming, Patriot Act takes the best of each to create something that feels unique — and vital.” (Vox.com)
The host, Hasan Minhaj, does not sit behind the desk. He walks around the stage, following up with well-timed jokes and graphics after delivering hard-hitting truths as if the show was one of his comedy specials (also on Netflix; check that out). Patriot Act also takes great care in being as informative as possible, focusing on one topic at a time rather than lumping multiple into one episode.
However, these pale in comparison to the fact that “Minhaj is the first Indian-American to host this kind of show, and ‘Patriot Act’ (led by Minhaj’s co-creator/head writer Prashanth Venkataramanujam) makes it count.” (Variety.com) He uses anecdotes from growing up as a first-generational, South Asia American to appeal to his audience. He uses these experiences to give his arguments a personal touch that only people of color could give. Minhaj uses the show to acknowledge the achievements, existence, and conflict within the Asian American community. He goes one step forward and encourages the community to come together and show solidarity with other communities like the Black community.
If you have a Netflix subscription, I highly suggest you watch Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.
“For a second, I was thinking that I might write 5 articles this time. Then I reminded myself that I'm weak and can't handle it.”
