National Bike to School Day has students in almost every state participating in an annual tradition that started in 2012. This year, it was scheduled to be on Wednesday, May 6, and although students won’t be coming to classes, they are encouraged to celebrate by riding their bicycles around the neighborhood.

The idea of creating a special day for this event started to be developed in 1997 with an original event named “Walk Our Children to School Day,” according to http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/. Walk to School Day, is held every October.

These events has led to an increase in communities when it came to fixing roads, sidewalks, pathways and more to make walking safer for those who decide to help save the environment by walking or riding to their destination.
