According to https://www.genome.gov/dna-day, April 25 is an especially important day. This year, people across the world will “commemorate both the 20th anniversary of the Human Genome Project’s completion and the 70th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA double helix” as they celebrate National DNA Day

So, what is DNA and what do those initials stand for? Cancer.gov defines it as “the molecule inside cells that contains the genetic information responsible for the development and function of an organism. DNA molecules allow this information to be passed from one generation to the next.” The name of this scientific miracle is derived from the initials of the elements that create it: Deoxyribonucleic Acid.

While DNA has been used for an assortment of reasons, including finding potential hereditary illnesses and matching birth parents with their children, one of the most fascinating uses is helping to find criminals who leave behind their DNA on their victims and at the scene. DNA can be used for years after the crime is committed and can either identify the perpetrator or free a person who has been proven not to be at the scene of a crime.

So celebrate what makes you a unique part of the world around you. Celebrate National DNA Day.
