The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer is a book I enjoyed reading, but it felt like an emotional rollercoaster.

The story starts off by introducing the 17 and 18 year olds Ambrose and Kodiak, who are from rival nations, having to go on a mission together. Ambrose has a sister who was sent to Titan years prior, but since then, there has been no update on her. No one, not even Ambrose, knew where she was or how she was doing. The only idea that Ambrose had was to go himself and try searching for her.

He decides to go with Kodiak and try to find his sister, hoping to bring her back safely. While they are alone in space, Ambrose wakes up and has no memory of what’s going on, questioning everything. Strange things start happening, such as the operating systems being voiced by family members, like his mom. That and other little things make Ambrose freak out.

The book was amazing and I happened to finish it quickly since I wanted to know what happened next. There were unexpected twists throughout the book that kept me hooked. The ending was something I didn’t expect and it made me feel emotional. I wished the ending was a little different.

I give it a 7/10 because it is a great book and I definitely recommend it if you want to feel something but some parts like the ending weren’t the best. I also really liked how the main character, Ambrose, was the narrator. It makes it easy to understand the story and see things from his perspective.
