Pumpkins, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are essential to a good fall meal.

Comfort foods have become a big topic in today’s society. People have different foods and beverages that they would consider comfort foods, and they vary from person to person, but almost everyone agrees on specific foods based on the season.

With the leaves turning yellow and falling off the trees, and the wind starting to pick up, décor in department stores and restaurants have started to feature pumpkins and scented pinecones. We’ll soon be hearing the term “sweater weather” start to spread.

Autumn starts on September 22, and the one special thing about autumn and the changing weather is the yummy foods that come along with it. Of course, there are no “rules” as to what you can and cannot eat when the seasons change, but there’s something special about the things that come into season and choosing those flavors for organic and manufactured foods and beverages.

Of course, the main thing people start to eat in the fall is pumpkin, in such favorites as pumpkin pie and pumpkin-flavored things in general. Other tasty treats include vegetables like carrots, squash, and sweet potatoes. Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and oats also become more popular, and legumes such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, and soybeans. Baking also becomes a fun tradition when fall rolls around.

Around the world it’s the same idea, but with different foods and recipes. For example, in Asia, in the fall people like to eat Lotus mooncakes with salted egg yolks, ham and nut mooncakes, and Su-Style red bean mooncakes. My family loves to eat bibingka, which is a type of baked rice cake from the Philippines.

Locally, we can’t forget that it’s not only the yummy food to pay attention to; it’s other things as well. Have you ever walked into the store and smelled pinecones or a certain spice and thought, “It smells like fall?” Spices and candles are something that can get anyone into the autumn spirit.

If you’re not really someone who is interested in decorating your house or even just enjoying the season, trust us, it’s wonderful!! You know what they always say: “Add a little spice to your autumn breeze!” You won’t regret it.
