Armijo students have a benefit that is not offered at any of the other schools. Students in their junior or senior year are able to take Introduction to Building Trades (Course Code #7980)

“This is the first course in the Building Trades Certification program,” according to the Course Catalogue. “Students will be provided with a general introduction and overview of careers in carpentry, plumbing and pipefitting, electrical trades, as well as iron and steel construction.”

While this class is open to juniors as well as seniors, those who take it as juniors can use it as a prerequisite to a senior course, Advanced Building Trades, which meets two periods a day where students can meet apprenticeship requirements for the careers listed.

Advanced Building Trades is the final class in the Building Trades Certification program, giving them a more in-depth exposure to carpentry, plumbing, pipefitting, electrical trades, as well as iron, steel, and green construction.

According to the FSUSD Course Catalog, this class allows students to have “the opportunity to participate in trade internships, and community classroom programs. Chief among these is the ability to work with Habitat for Humanity in home construction and community improvement teams.”

Students who are interested in graduating with the necessary experience in the trades should consider joining Introduction to Building Trades as a junior so that they can develop the skills expected.
