Grab your popcorn and stay up late with two movies.

Fuel up your cars and get some snacks! National Drive-In Movie Day is here!.

A drive-in movie is like a theater, but you get to park your car and watch the movie from your own vehicle. While you’re doing that you can get views of the stars and see the night sky as well.

Celebrating this national day can be fun! With new movies being shown locally and classics also available, it is a safe way to see a film with your friends, family, or significant other. There are drive-ins located near you and they are closer than you think!  Westwind Drive-ins operate two nearby locations:

1611 Solano Way, Concord (Showtimes)

9616 Oates Dr., Sacramento (Showtimes)

National Drive-In Movie Day honors Richard M. Hollingshead Jr. of Camden, New Jersey, who introduced drive-in movie theaters on June 6, 1933. The screen at the first drive-in theater was 40 feet by 50 feet, with 400 car spaces. “The entire family is welcome, regardless of how rowdy the children are,” read the promotional slogan (Wired.com).

At one time there were over 4000 drive-in theaters in the United States. Today, there are only about 325 (Drive-In Movies.com). We’re lucky to have two of them nearby. .
