Rethink what you see as sports!

For decades, women have fought for the right to have the same opportunities. Only about 100 years ago, women gained the right to vote in the United States and for the last 50 years or so, women have been fighting for the same economic and athletic opportunities.

Declared by President Ronald Reagan, National Girls and Women in Sports Day, first known as National Women in Sports Day, was established to recognize the achievements of women’s athletics. On February 3, 1987 the national celebration was established. It has not been celebrated every February 3.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day doesn’t just acknowledge female athletes but also recognizes “coaches, administrators and lawmakers who are committed to providing equitable access to sports for all girls and women,” according to the Women Sports Foundation.

An exemplary union would be the Amateur Athletic Union. They allowed women to pursue their love for sports and authorized them to form a team and compete. In 1922, women were permitted to participate in events relating to track and field. Later on in 1934, they sponsored the first national women’s basketball tournament.

Serena Williams, Simone Biles, and Billie Jean King are a few famous female athletes. Being an inspiration to others, they motivate young girls to pursue their passion in sports. The Women Sport Foundation also has a variation of intriguing stories of female athletes.
