Blood donations can happen locally, even during COVID-19.

Since 1970, January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month. According to the www.redcross.org, during this month, hospitals can collect more than 13,000 donations every day in order to have enough blood since in the winter time.

Even before COVID-19, winter has been a season when many people get ill and inured. During this season, it is hard to maintain a sufficient blood supply.  That is why January became National Blood Donor Month.

Here in Fairfield , there are places where you can donate  blood. One of those places is Blood Centers of the Pacific, at 1325 Gateway Boulevard, C1, to Michaels. After you get tested you get a health screening and fill out a questionnaire. All of the requirements are on www.vitalant.org so you can visit that website if you are interested.

Donating blood is an easy way to help save lives. There are restrictions, but with COVID-19, there are also many rewards. Most donor collection sites will test blood for the virus and if COVID-19 antibodies are found, the platelets harvested can benefit those who are currently suffering from the infection. However, donors need to be at least 17-years old (or 16-years old with parent permission), weigh at least 110 lbs. and be in good health. These vary slightly from organization to organization, so before donating, you might want to check with the location for specific requirements.
