Leave a legacy for your descendants by learning about your own.

DNA has become a very popular topic in the last few years. Science has been using people’s DNA to trace family lines, study genetics regarding diseases and finding cures, and even to solve crimes.

Before DNA was easily identified, though, families paid close attention to their ancestors and studied genealogy by looking at official documents like birth, marriage and death certificates and census records. National Roots Day, December 23, encourages people to delve into their own family history, heritage, and ancestry. Some people take this as an advantage to take ancestry tests, look through photos, and talk to distant relatives.

To celebrate National Roots Day, people often get together with their families and celebrate their heritage and family history. I have a mixed background so I sometimes celebrate by eating different meals from each heritage, or I do research on my mixed background and where my family comes from. It is a great time to learn about extended family, especially when gathering together with them is not necessarily an option due to the pandemic.

On National Roots Day, celebrate where you come from and to learn as much as you can about your own family heritage.
