What comes after giving thanks?

Gratitude doesn’t stop with Thanksgiving.

You may have spent your life celebrating Thanksgiving Day, but have you ever celebrated You’re Welcomegiving Day? This is always the day after Thanksgiving, naturally, which means that it is being celebrated on November 27.

This day was made to insure that people remember to say “You’re welcome” after helping someone and after spending a day giving thanks.

The phrase “You’re welcome” is a common response to “Thank you” in English, but it is not the way that all languages acknowledge thanks. The National Day Calendar shares some other ways to respond in English:

  • It was our pleasure.
  • I was honored to do it.
  • Our home is your home.
  • I was happy to (fill in the blank).
  • It was a delight having you.
  • I hope someone will do the same for me if I’m ever in the same predicament.
  • We enjoyed (fill in the blank).
  • This is our favorite thing to do!

Saying thank you and your welcome has a positive impact on people’s days. You can use any of these responses to react to gratitude, and that was probably on Richard Ankil’s mind when he created Your Welcomegiving Day in 1977, but much of his reasoning was to create a four-day weekend.
