The weather is getting colder, the days are getting shorter and, with the arrival of November, it is Adopt a Senior Pet Month and the first week of the month is also National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, from November 1 – 7.

Founded by ASPCA and Petfinder.com, Adopt a Senior Pet Month focuses on helping all aged furry friends find a forever home. If you have desired or plan to adopt a pet, consider adopting an older pet at one of the local animal shelters. Most elderly pets surprisingly don’t need training and can easily adjust to their surroundings. Some pets may need space for themselves within a household and even medication for their health.

According to prudentpet.com, older pets can still have many years of companionship to offer with the proper love and care. Adoption is always a choice, so remember to share this essential information with friends who are looking for a pet. Donating, volunteering, and reporting animal abuse to rescue organizations or local animal shelters can also be a way for you to participate through Adopt a Senior Pet Month.

From Sunday, November 1 to Saturday, November 7, National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week give people a chance to recognize animal shelters for their dedication to help countless stray and abandoned animals find a new home. “Animal shelters are vital resources for their communities,” according to the Martha Speaks newsletter at www-tc.pbs.org.

Shelters can reunite owners with their pets and provide many other services for animals. National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week was founded by the Humane Society back in 1996 as a way to show appreciation and support animal shelters within the United States. Adopting a pet, making donations, and volunteering in animal shelters are ways for you to honor shelters during National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.
