On August 19, 1837, the work of two Frenchmen, Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre, was patented. Today, we recognize images known as daguerreotypes, and the world has not been the same since.

We tend to take photographs for granted. They scatter from old scrapbooks, we see them carefully placed in textbooks, we are drawn to them in newspapers. Today, we complain that there are too many pictures on our phone or we can’t get the right one, but less than 200 years ago, a photo was precious. World Photo Day was only created 10 years ago, founded by Korske Ara.
