Wrestling Is Just the Start of Things

Raymond runs and Raymond wrestles. A great combination!

Raymond Brown is on his second year on the Armijo Wrestling team. “I chose to wrestle because I have had friends that have wrestled and it has always seemed very interesting to me,” he said. “Right now I am in the 152-lb weight class, but I have been weighing around 148-150. Last year I wrestled in the 145-lb class.” He hopes to get back down to that class this year.

Since wrestling is only a winter sport, Brown fills the rest of his school year with Cross Country and Track and Field. “I hope to wrestle in college, but am not sure where exactly I would like to go as of now,” he said.

Practice and competition might seem overwhelming, but Brown would encourage others to get involved in sports. “Don’t waste your time contemplating joining a sport,” he said. “Just get out there and see if you’re into it!”

“I have seven siblings, but I think I would say my two older brothers Isaac and Beau have influenced my interest in sports and my passion for wanting to do the best and be the best.” Although he has his brothers to thank for his interest, he has created his own experiences. “My most memorable meet would be the dual meet last year at Napa High. It was my first time going varsity and I ended up pinning the guy, so that was pretty cool.”

If he could change one thing about Armijo, he said that he would change how people think. “I wish the students at Armijo were more thoughtful and less disrespectful,” he said.
