Armijo Earns Top Prizes in Poster Contest
Before Alice Herston had finished up ninth grade, she had already been recognized for her artistic talent. Herston had entered the annual Earth Day poster contest and had walked away from the event a first place winner for the high school division.
“I have been entering this contest every year for a while, because my mom works at the Fairfield Suisun Sewer District, who participates in the Earth Day fair every year,” Herston said. “I have also always loved art, so this contest has always been a lot of fun for me. My siblings and I love to enter this contest.”
The theme was: What do you recycle? Herston’s artwork is a landscape depicting a park scene where everyone is committed to recycle and keeping the park clean. “I drew someone picking up recycling, and someone pulling a recycling bin, with a kid chasing behind it,” she said.
The first place prize was a certificate and a $50 Walmart gift card. The sponsors vary from year to year. “I have won this contest multiple times. There are different age groups, so this was my first time competing in the high school age group,” said Herston. “I found out about winning at the Earth Day fair, where they displayed the artwork and announced/awarded the winners. I felt very proud to have won, because I put a lot of work into my art.”
Armijo also had the second place winner in the high school division, Giuliana Arias.
