Final Fling for the Class of 2018
Usually, by May, the senior class has heard solid evidence and firm details about
the annual senior trip, but this year it has been fueled mostly by rumors. While the trip
has, in the past, been held in May, this year’s trip won’t take place until Friday, June 1.
The plan, which is currently awaiting approval by the Fairfield-Suisun Unified
School District (FSUSD) School Board, is to have students travel by bus to California’s
Great America. Seniors who are not attending the event will be expected to be in school
as it is a regular day of classes and finals start the following week. “There’s no
substitute [activity],” said Mr. Brad Burzynski, leadership teacher. “The student [who is
not attending the Senior Trip] should stay at school and try to get his or her grades up.”
In order to participate, students must be on the graduation list and have reserved
a spot on one of the buses before the deadline. Reservations will be made when
payments are made to the Treasurer’s office and those payments will be accepted when
the trip has been approved by the School Board. Tickets are expected to be about $100
and have included, in the past, transportation to and from the park, meals, a special
“seniors only” dance party, and more. This year’s cost and coverage will be announced
later in May.
While this year’s class is scheduled to go to Great America that has not always
been the destination. When Mr. Burzynski first became teacher of the Leadership class,
the senior class went to Disneyland. “We had about three or four buses, and two of
them experienced tire trouble or engine trouble, so those students on the bus didn’t get
to enjoy their trip as much as the other students who made it earlier,” he said. From that
point on, all the FSUSD high schools and others in the county have promised to only
host senior trips to Great America.
