Athlete focus: One rung at a time
This season of Boys’ Tennis began around mid-February. This year, Elijah Ibrahim plays on the Singles’ ladder as #4.
Last year, Ibrahim played on the Doubles’ ladder at #3. Going from doubles to singles was a significant jump in ladder ranking. “Being on the Singles’ ladder is different from doubles in the sense that 1) you don’t have another person playing alongside you, and 2) the fact that you have to cover more of the court,” he said.
The previous season was his first time picking up a tennis racket in his life, but he said that he is very glad that he did.
By Spring Break, Ibrahim had won three games and lost two in the first round of matches and he continues to advance his skills.
Being #4 on the singles ladder has helped him tremendously improve his game by learning different strategies and developing a better connection with his teammates.
Coming into this season with a loss of talented students who graduated last year offered a tough challenge to the success of the team as a whole. However, Ibrahim said, “there is an overall more enthusiastic and competitive vibe from every player.” He is excited to see how the team will place against other schools at the end of the season.
