Melissa Wilson, the golf coach of the girl’s golf team at Armijo High School spoke to me about how the season went and how it’s looking for the future.
Ms Wilson expressed to me that being the golf coach was not in her plans this school year and it just came to her while she was recruiting people for the team. Ms. Wilson coached softball here at Armijo for a long time so comparing softball to golf she described golf as a quiet game and very different from the other sports she’s coached.
The biggest challenge the golf team had was being an off-campus sport. An off-campus sport is basically when your sport doesn’t have a court or a field that can be played on the campus of the school. Golf here at Armijo is an off-campus sport so their home course was Paradise Valley. The team struggled with getting to and from practices because they were not being held at Armijo, which left the golf team struggling to find transportation to practice. The girls that played golf were very brand new to it and never really had experience. Ms Wilson says “ We finished with nine golfers and one was a senior so we have eight returners, the goal is to have all eight return for next season.”
