Looking for extra credits, a GPA boost, or a more advanced class. Solano Community College offers a surplus of classes open to high school students who have the prerequisites they need. As a high school student, your class/classes will be covered if they are under 6 units for the summer semester and less than 11 units for the fall/spring semesters. You will be responsible for additional costs such as textbooks, scantrons, school supplies, and any needed books for the course/courses,
Colleges highly recommend taking a summer course for high school kids. Any college course is weighted so it helps boost GPAs. These classes teach valuable lessons such as how to study, time management skills, and how a real college course feels. As well as helping you pursue a higher education it can give you a more advanced and challenging Curriculum. For example, Armijo doesn’t offer anything above Math HL Year 2. That is equivalent to Calculus but colleges have much more. If you are interested in being a STEM major this could be your path.
“In the summer of 2023, I took a Solano math course, Precalculus and Trigonometry. This was a great way to keep busy and help myself excel in High School. That singular class gave me 20 math credits in high school and allowed me to take a year off from having a high school math class.”, said Raquel.
Student costs are not excessively high but still real. Typically there is a fee once you register in class that is not covered by the high school, but it’s not a very high bill. Depending on your class and teacher you will have to pay for a textbook which can be expensive. There are sites and things you can do to reduce the price such as used books. If you go over the covered units for a class you have to pay for the class in full. For example, if you register for a class in the summer over 5.99 units you will have to pay all of the units. It doesn’t cover the 5.99 unitsand you pay the remaining, it covers a class under 6 units.
Solano’s environment is very friendly. It’s a great place to take a class to push yourself and strive towards getting an associate, BA, BS, etc. Professors offer office hours to go in and get help. Along with that, Armijo covered the majority of the costs. Don’t hesitate to take a course. It’s better now to take them while the school absorbs the cost!
