I interviewed my friend Mailey-Rose Reyes and asked her a couple of questions about her experiences moving to Fairfield, CA.
Where Were you Originally From, and What Was it Like There?
To start off the interview I asked, “Where were you originally from, and what was it like there?” She responded, “I am from Guam, and it is very much like the U.S. They have some American stores but not all.”
What Was it Like for You When You Found Out You Were Moving to Fairfield?
“I felt betrayed and pushed because I was unaware that I was going to come out here this early.”
What Are Your Impressions of the People Here in Town?
“My impressions of the people here are that they are rich, wealthy, self-centered. But when I actually arrived my impressions shifted because a lot of the people here were very welcoming to me coming here. Along with that, when I first started school I noticed that everyone was their own person, in my eyes, it was like they are their own little character.”
How Do You Like the Community Here?
“I don’t like the community here as a whole but most of the people here are really nice, the bad people here are typically really rude, self-centered, and unwelcoming. When I say that people are self-centered I mean that they are very disrespectful and only care about themselves. For example, if I was walking in the halls and someone saw me coming they don’t move out of the way to make it easier to get by they just continue walking unphased.”
What Are Your Thoughts Overall on Your Life Here?
“My thoughts on my life here are that it’s good, I’m living a good life, it’s a very nice community and it’s filled with a lot of nice people. My family is stable. At the end of the day, I have a roof over my head so I’m happy.
Since Moving Here, How Would You Say It Has Affected Your Life? Good or Bad?
“Moving here has been very good because my environment is better, my living situation and family life has been better compared to in Guam.”
If You Had the Chance to Make the Decision Yourself, Would You Have Moved Here? Why or Why Not?
“Yes, I would have because I have met some amazing people, experienced new and different things. As well as experiencing many new cultures and how they live.”
How Many Similarities and Differences Are There From Fairfield to Guam?
“The differences are the housing, population, better quality stores than Guam, whereas in Guam the beaches are nicer, the nature is more scenic, and things are less expensive. There are only a few similarities to Guam and Fairfield but I would say the fast food chains are the same, as well as most shopping stores. But the environment is very different.”
Although Mailey enjoys living here in Fairfield, she will always love and miss her home in Guam.
