Royals run to the front of the pack
May 9 marked the beginning of the Armijo Track teams postseason with the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division 3 meet at Lincoln High School in Lincoln. On Tuesday, May 9, Armijo had the trials where the entire division was whittled down to eight athletes per event and the Royals came back on Thursday, May 10, to decide the six athletes that would be sent on to the Masters meet in Davis, starting May 15.
The Royals sent the Varsity Girls’ team of Cierra Kinsey, Ani Kinsey, Sanai Wilson, and A’Jah Parks who placed second in the 4x100m with a time of 48.75. They are currently ranked 4th in the section and the Top four next week qualify for State!
Lilian Luu was sixth in the mile with a new personal best of 5:20.42.
Cierra Kinsey was second in the 400m with a time of 56.76, she is ranked 3rd in the section overall. Cierra also qualified in the 200m, running a 25.27 and finishing fourth.
Evan Wortham qualified in the sixth place in the 200m, running a 22.51 and beating 7th place by .01 seconds (and he just missed moving on the 400m by that same margin, finishing seventh with a time of 50.63 to 6th places 50.62)
Finally, the Royals Boys’ 4x400m relay team of Treveon Henderson, Deonte White, Jesse Reid, and Evan Wortham placed sixth in 3:32.26.
It was a fantastic series of performances as Armijo qualified almost all of their runners onto the next stage. Another amazing result is that the Armijo Girls’ team finished ninth place in the meet out of 26 scoring teams, missing a tie for seventh place by one point, but managing to beat all of the other Monticello Empire League (MEL) teams!
Students and staff are encouraged to congratulate these athletes as this is a fantastic series of results and the entire coaching staff couldn’t be happier.
