Track athletes shine and advance
MELs is finally over and Armijo is advancing quite a few of our amazing track and field team members! The rules of qualification are simple: If you place in the top four of your event as a Varsity team member, you move on to the postseason. All of the following athletes managed to meet that criteria in the MEL finals meet and will represent the school Tuesday and Thursday, May 9 and 11, at Lincoln HS at Divisionals.
It started on Wednesday when Jordan Brown managed to qualify in the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 3 inches.
On Friday all of the running events had their finals and Armijo had a great showing.
- Our Varsity girls team of Cierra Kinsey, Ani Kinsey, Sanai Wilson, and A’Jah Parks won the 4x100m relay with a time of 48.89. Ours boys team of Treveon Henderson, Deonte White, Jesse Reid, and Evan Wortham were 3rd in 43.38.
- Lilian Luu was 3rd in the mile with a time of 5:24. Hisael Flores finished 5th in his mile race with a time of 4:46 but will get to run as one of the runners who finished ahead of him was scratched after the race.
- Cierra Kinsey won the 400m in a time of 57.59 and Evan Wortham qualified with a time of 52.14.
- In the 100m, Ani Kinsey qualified by finishing 2nd in a time of 12.72.
- In the 200m, it was the Kinsey sisters again qualifying with Cierra finishing 1st in 25.60 and Ani finishing 3rd in 26.40 while Evan Wortham finished 3rd in the boys race with a time of 23.30
- Finally, we have the 4400m Relay. Our girls team of Cierra Kinsey, Ani Kinsey, Anaya Jackson, and A’Jah Parks won with a time of 4:17.64 while our boys team of Treveon Henderson, Deonte White, Jesse Reid, and Evan Wortham placed second in 3:34.76.
For those of you keeping score Cierra Kinsey was a League champion in four different events on Friday! You cannot be entered in more than four events, so that is an amazing accomplishment and one of the best track performances I have ever seen. I don’t have time to list all of the Frosh / Soph results as well but we had a great performance there as well.
