Tropic like It’s Hot!
Fashion Focus – Weekends on the Water
As the tide for summer draws nearer, people are enthusiastic about going for a swim to cool off from the hot sun. Swimming is relaxing, but if one can’t dress appropriately for the environment, being at the beach, pool, or boat will probably be uncomfortable. With this, you should ask anyone, WATER you wearing for weekends on the water?
Swim Cover Ups
It’s no doubt that to wear your normal clothes to go for a swim is silly, but before and after you swim, you’ll need a cover-up for your bathing suit. Wearing a swimsuit cover-up is great since it can easily be taken on and off as needed.
The Smocked Waist Side-Slit Cover-Up Pants from Kona Sol™, are just right, since it’s breathable, and fairly easy to style. Pair this with any of your tees, wear your swimsuit under, and you’re ready to go!
If you’re looking for something more flowy and dressy, the Shiraleah Pink Dede Swim Cover Up “features a vibrant pink color, neck ties, and an intricate trim giving it an extra boho flair perfect for your relaxing day near the water.”
For men, you could wear a light polo shirt on top of your swimwear. A similar example to this is the Men’s V-Neck Short Sleeve Sun & Swim Shirt which offers the best in class sun protection with a UPF rating of 50+.
Swim Shops & Swimwear
Have you ever wanted to go swimming but realized you lacked the appropriate attire? Swimsuits can help with this because they are made specifically for the water and won’t make you feel heavy, won’t discolor in the sun or from chemicals, and won’t hurt other people in the water.
But where would you get your swimwear? Actually, it may surprise you that your local shop to buy swimwear is just around the corner – that shop being Target! Looking at Target’s selection, they provide a selection for all sorts of body shapes & sizes! For example their Women’s Metallic Side-Ruched High Leg Cheeky One Piece Swimsuit ($45) has sizes that range from XXS, XXL, to 4X! This swimsuit, as said in the description, is “made from soft fabric with added spandex for stretchy comfort in and out of the water. The metallic orange hue gives you a bright look you’ll love, and the swimsuit is designed with removable cups for customizable coverage.”
Another swim/summer shop is PacSun, whose name literally means PACific SUNwear! For men, PacSun is the way to go, since it ranges from simple swim shorts to more detailed patterns.PacSun’s Solid Collegiate 17″ Swim Trunks ($27) are a great choice for simple swimwear if you just want to swim without standing out.
As opposed to the Collegiate Swim Trunks, the Kulani Kinis Sapphire Sun 16″ Swim Trunks, are vibrant with pattern, a great choice if you want to bring extra style for swimming!
Waterproof Accessories
When taking selfies in the water, your makeup can get drenched – and your selfie, drenched in dissatisfaction. Since most girls might not be comfortable being barefaced for a selfie, waterproof makeup exists! Did you know that even competitive swimmers wear makeup? Addy Colona, a professional synchronized swimmer and assistant coach of the Freedom Valley Synchro team, provides a great example of enhancing her beauty with makeup, while being underwater!
In her interview with Allure, she gives tips for what makeup to use. “…it is very important that the eye makeup not only stays on but doesn’t flake off make it even harder to see,” Colona says. “[Make Up For Ever’s] mascara is great and does not smudge or chip.” Although Make Up For Ever’s Mascara may be in favor of Colona, it’s definitely not in favor of my wallet, since it costs $24. Fortunately, Colona recommends a cheaper alternative, Maybelline’s New York Great Lash Waterproof Mascara at $7!
Mascara isn’t the only makeup that’s waterproof! Anna Morera, another synchronized swimmer, told Allure that Wet n’ Wild’s matte lipsticks tend to stay on better. Morera named Wet n Wild’s MegaLast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick ($6) as something her whole team could afford.
Here’s a list of other makeup recommendations from both swimmers!
