DVD Review – Tick, Tick… Boom!

IMDB.com

A musical about a man writing a musical… that’s good storytelling.

Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tick, Tick… Boom! is a musical / drama that came out in 2021. Lin-Manuel Miranda is known for his big role in Hamilton (2020), but that isn’t his only success. He has also made an appearance in many Disney movies, including Vivo (2021) and the upcoming film The Little Mermaid (2023).

In Tick, Tick… Boom!, Miranda has turned this true story into an hour and 55 minute masterpiece which is available through streaming services such as Netflix. It is about the life of Jonathan Larson (played by Andrew Garfield) and his journey to writing a successful stage musical. Garfield has played in the Amazing Spider-Man movies and has earned an Oscar nomination for his roles and won a Grammy nomination as well.

Switching from action movies to musicals was a big change for Garfield. He mentioned in interviews that he really built a connection with his character and he wasn’t ready to let it go out to the world. In fact, it took him over a year on voice lessons and he learned how to play the piano for the film. Although it was a challenge for Garfield, he told interviewers that he likes to try out new things and this was one of them, so when Miranda offered the role to him he took it.

My overall rate to Tick, Tick… Boom! was a 7/10. I’m not really into musicals but the acting was really good. I felt myself feeling for all the characters and I would recommend this film to those who are interested in musicals or the works of Garfield or Miranda.
