Calls seen as impediment to score
Varsity: 1-2 Loss (2-1-0) JV: 1-2 Loss (1-1-1)
Varsity: This was one of the craziest games that Coach Megan Flores has ever coached. The Royals started off slow, giving the Vacaville Bulldogs the lead early and then there were questionable calls after questionable calls to BOTH teams, leading to an over-the-top 2nd half.
Armijo ended the first half down two and with a red card that should have been a yellow, which lead to playing the entire second half down a player.
The Royals came back in strong, even down one, and held the Bulldogs off. Then, after two fouls to one of Armijo’s seniors, Vacaville ended up with a red of their own finally and it was a 10v10 match.
Then yet ANOTHER foul led to a beautiful free kick from the 20-yard line (30 yards from goal line) by senior Misael Cisneros Gomez that went straight into the far upper left corner. Armijo then ended the game on time… even though there was at least five minutes of overage, if not more, due to injury, cards and arguing.
Overall it was a well fought battle against a top team that unfortunately was over the top due to referees. Both Armijo’s and Vacaville’s coaches agreed that a statement would need to be sent to the head referee assignor. Armijo ended with heads still high, however, and with a great show of sportsmanship and respect by both teams and all coaching staff.
Armijo takes on Vanden Thursday, January 19, at home.
Junior Varisty (JV): Vacaville High started off the game strong looking to keep 1st place. The first 10-15 minutes were fought for possession until an Armijo mistake was made and Vacaville was able to score to make it 1-0.
About five minutes later, Vacaville was able to get another one in after a free-kick. In the second half, Armijo was looking to change the momentum. The defensive line kept any Vacaville plays away from the goal. In the last 10 minutes of the game, Isaac Aguirre took a long shot from 25 yards out to make it 2-1. The pressure continued but Armijo was not able to tie it.
