Armijo JV went undefeated in the Pitman Cup
Varsity (2-4-0); JV (5-0-0)
Both Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV) teams went to a big tournament on Friday and Saturday, December 3 and 4, in Turlock to play some new teams we wouldn’t usually compete against until playoffs. Varsity, unfortunately, did not do as well as expected with missing players and some poor field conditions that threw off the Royals’ usual play style. JV on the other hand did amazing, with almost a full squad available and some good opponents. They went undefeated but only took 3rd due to the tournament’s point system.
Armijo 3-2 Edison
The Royals started the first game looking for a goal. Freshman Artemio Perez scored with a right footed shot to the bottom left of the goal to make it 1-0 within the first three minutes. Freshman Isaac Aguirre scored right before the half to make it 2-0. A couple back to back keeper and defensive mistakes put Edison back into the game with two goals to tie the game. In the second half, freshman Fabian Silva subbed in and gave a great cross in for a header for Perez to score his second goal of the match and give Armijo the win.
Armijo 10-0 Beyer
In the second game of the day, the JV boys faced Beyer from Modesto that was down two players. Armijo dominated from start to finish where multiple players were able to score. Aguirre scored foour, Perez scored two, Valentin Vera scored two, Ameer Ghanem scored one, and Juan Uscanga scored one. This put the boys in a great spot to fight for the #1 spot in the group to play in the final.
Armijo 7-1 Yuba City
The Royals started the game a bit shaky in the defense and a penalty was called for Yuba early in the game to give them a 1-0 lead. Right away Armijo turned things around in order to win the game. Perez scored 4 goals, while Aguirre, Vera, and Uscanga each scored one goal.
Armijo 5-1 El Capitan (3rd Place Match)
In this tournament format each win would grant 3 points, 1 point for a shutout, and 1 point for each goal (3 max). There was two groups where the top #1 team from each group played the final and the #2 teams played for 3rd place. Due to this format Armijo finished 2nd in their group by only 1 point as another team had one more shutout. The boys had to play for 3rd place even though they had won all their previous games.
Right away Armijo applied pressure and got a goal in by Edwing Saucedo Pacheco. Aguirre and Perez scored next to go into the half with a 3-0 lead. In the second half, El Cap was able to get one in after various rebounds. Vera took over and scored two goals to close the game out with a 5-1 win. The boys took home 3rd place.
