Japan offers 300+ Kit Kat flavors
After Halloween, people are enjoying a variety of candy that was passed out during trick-or-treating, but here in America, students probably won’t find Japanese Kit Kats in their collection.
A form of Kit Kats was first introduced in Great Britain around 1935 under the name Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp. Under the name Kit Kat, Hershey’s introduced them in the United States around 1970.
In 1973, Kit Kats were introduced in Japan under the leadership of Nestlé’s.
In 2004, Japanese Kit Kats became popular for their variety of flavors. The first flavor introduced was Green Tea and now there are more than 300 unique flavors, according to Bokksu. In Japan they are often sold as “omiyage” which translates to “souvenir” in English.
American Kit Kats come in several flavors, but not nearly as many as those from Japan. That’s because Kit Kat in the United States is owned by Hershey’s while the global Kit Kats are from Nestlé’s. Even though Japanese Kit Kats are hard to find, they’re not impossible to find in the United States. They are sometimes available at local Asian markets and can be ordered online from Amazon.
