The story behind Stephen Hawking

DVD Review – The Theory of Everything

IMDB.com

A story that shows the depths and shallows of love.

The Theory of Everything is a movie brought to us by James Marsh in 2014. This movie is based on the real Stephen Hawking, a professor, scientist, and author of famous books about cosmology and physics; and his ex-wife Jane Hawking, a teacher and English author.

The movie takes us through Hawking’s life, from when he was first diagnosed to the year 2014. (He died in 2018.) The conflict in this movie starts after Stephen and Jane fall in love quickly. He then starts overworking and takes a big fall. This fall leads him to a doctor’s visit where he is diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease or ALS.

This condition caused him to distance himself from everyone and work with the life he had left. Jane had fallen in love quickly and felt sympathy for him as he was told he only had two years to live. They got married and started a family, but with that came more hardship as Jane started to grow tired of all the work, and Stephen grew weaker and less mobile.

The hardships got to Jane and she sought help. She latched onto the help and fell in love with Johnathan, making her more distant from her husband. By the time Hawking had flown to the United States and fell into a coma, the affair was over.

Later, Jane hired a caregiver for her husband. He still wasn’t getting as much attention from his wife and started to lean on his caregiver, and that made Jane return to Johnathan. Stephen didn’t want to take that from Jane and he let her go on with her love affair.

Stephen and Jane had raised three children, but they divorced in 1995, remaining good friends. In 1997, she married to Johnathan Jones.

I feel his children were one of the best parts of the movie because, even though their father was different from all the other fathers, they still loved him and did the same things a family would do.

Stephen having the melt down in his room with Jane was one of the best and worst parts of the movie. He had this tragic thing happening to him and had to deal with the fact that he might not live for much longer; but Jane expressed her undying love for him in such a heartwarming and passionate way. It shows how love can make you stay and
want to do everything for someone, but also that the love you have can slowly fade out of love.

Despite the challenges, their love for each other was strong; and the movie showed that not loving someone anymore doesn’t make you a bad person, but a human.

This movie will make you cry, mad, and fulfilled with the end. I would give this movie an 8/10 and would recommend this movie to anyone.
