Gagliardi brought in the most wins
With a career that spanned over 60 years, John Gagliardi (November 1, 2026 – October 7, 2018) is considered the winningest coach of college football.
His record started when he coached at Carroll College in Helena, Montana from 1949 to 1952, but the next year he moved on to Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, where he was the Head Coach from 1953 to 2012.
At Saint John’s, he led his team to four national titles, from 1963 to 2003.
He started coaching as a high school student when his own football coach was sent to fight in World War II. He went on to have a strong winning record at Carroll College, and with the hundreds of wins at Saint John’s, he was able to retire with a 489–138–11 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gagliardi).
The previous record was 409 wins and Gagliardi didn’t only break it, but went on to shatter it. Not only was he the coach with the most wins, he was also the coach to serve his team longer than any other college football team.
