A unique name that represents family heritage
All in a Name: Jose Mexicanos Ramos

One of the things Jose loves to do is play sports, especially soccer and basketball
When your last name is Mexicano Ramos, there’s little doubt about your family heritage. “The last name Mexicano is from my Dad’s side, Ramos is from my mom’s,” said Jose Mexicano Ramos. He is the last of his family to attend Armijo, but two of his older siblings have already graduated.
When people meet Mexicano, they often comment on how unusual his name is. “They always say it’s a rare and unique last name and they never hear that,” he said. The only real nickname he has is Ricky. “My family has been calling me that since I was little.”
While he hasn’t been part of any school sports, he does have a love for playing both soccer and basketball for fun. “I also love going to horse racing,” he said. When he finishes school, he has some goals. He would either like to start a business in landscaping or become a California Highway Patrol officer.

Was doing a quick google search on myself, and found this article! Never thought I’d see someone else with the same name! I will say, the comments never really stop, but at least finding out the origin of the last name has given me a cool story to tell.
If you were ever interested in knowing the origin of your last name, here is the story! As far as I know it dates back to the 1500s or so when the Spanish were conducting censuses on the Mexican population. As many indigenous peoples did not have a last name that fit the eurocentric standards, they were often given a Spanish last name (Ramos, Guiterrez, Sanchez, etc.)
However, for some of the indigenous people who spoke Nahuatl, the indigenous language of the Aztec/Mexica peoples, they were given the last name “Mexicano”. So one of your great great great great great ancestors may have spoken Nahuatl when the Spanish were conducting their censuses!
