Newton makes waves as a swimmer
Athlete focus: Audrey Newton, swimming
When Audrey Newton was a freshman, a friend in her art class asked her to come to the Swim team try-outs, and she has been swimming for Armijo ever since. While she’s never broken any other records, as she has improved over the years she has continued to break her own personal bests.
It hasn’t been an easy three years, but it has been productive. “COVID made our team six people last year,” she said.
“My preferred stroke is freestyle,” Newton said. “I do both individual and relay.” She also participates on the Armijo Water Polo team. For those wondering about trying out for either team, she said, “Get involved in sports. It’s a great outlet.”
“My most memorable meet is my soph0more year at the Fairfield High meet because my coach had us all swim the 500,” Newton said.
While she doesn’t plan to continue swimming competitively in college, she does know where she wants to go. “I want to go to UC Santa Barbara,” she said.
Swimming and Water Polo definitely keep her busy, but she does spend time watching anime when she can.
Newton is youngest of three. Her closer brother, Jesse, is 19, but her older brother Scot passed away.
