Book Review – The Lake Effect
The Lake Effect By Erin McCahan is about Briggs Henry, a young man who graduates high school and decides to continue the tradition of spending his summer in the beach town of South Haven, where he helps Mrs. B care for her lakefront property.
Mrs. B is a funny and caring older woman. She lives next door to a very pretty young lady, Abigail, who has sparked Brigg Henry’s interest. Biggs Henry usually just wanted to go along with everything, to play it safe and not go out of his comfort zone, but soon his world felt like everything was changing.
Something that I really liked about this book was that Henry said that over the summer break he really tried to reach out to Abigail and get to know her but he wasn’t sure if she’d want to talk. One day he saw her and he walked over to talk to her, and she gave him some really good life advice.
I also really enjoyed how the older lady was always there with Henry and talking him through some of his hard times, how she never left his side. She always gave him good advice to use in life and what she learned growing up. She did tell him that the girl next door was very friendly and encouraged him to talk to her.
While he originally went to help Mrs. B, he ends up spending some of his time during the summers with Abigail.
Something that I did not like about the book is that it was a slow timeline. Things didn’t happen as quickly as I thought they should. I just felt like they were dragging out the book and some of the smaller events that were going on to make the book longer.
Overall I would recommend this book. I took away some of the lessons that they showed in the book. I think it would really make a large difference in my life if I took all of those lessons and used them to better myself.
