Hitting the links with an AHS Royal

Athlete focus: Ciaran Simmons, golfer

Emily Torres Maravilla

Over the years, Ciaran has changed his mind in favor of golf.

Q: Why did you choose to go into golf? How long have you been participating in golf for AHS or outside? Have you played for any other teams? Have you gone to any championships?  Broken any records?

A: To be honest, I went into golf because my friends and I thought it’d be a fun opportunity to do something other than sit at home all day. I’ve been participating in golf for AHS for one year, and I haven’t played much outside other than on my own. I’ve never played for any other teams, gone to any championships, or broken any records.

Q: Who introduced you to golf? How long have you been playing?

A: My dad introduced me to golf when I was younger and much less interested in all honesty. I didn’t really get into it then and it wasn’t until last year when I began actually playing. So I’ve been playing for about a year.

Q: How has COVID-19 affected your season? Did you play in last year?

A: As far as I know, COVID-19 hasn’t affected the season so far, but it did cut the last season short. I did play in it last year.

Q: Do you participate in any other sports? Do you plan to continue playing golf in college? Where do you hope to go?

A: I used to play soccer, but COVID-19 stopped that, so no, I don’t play any other sports at the moment. I don’t really plan to play golf in college other than for fun on occasion. I hope to attend the University of Southern California.

Q: Besides golf, what else are you involved with (both at school and outside of school)? What are your hobbies? What do you want to do when you graduate (school plans and career goals)?

A: I’m in the IB program, National Honor Society; I was in Leadership in the last two years and plan to continue next year. My hobbies are watching films and making my own to little success. When I graduate, I plan on majoring in film and business. As a career, I hope to become a film director or really any major role in filmmaking.

Q: What advice would you give to someone contemplating on getting involved in sports?

A: Advice I would give to someone contemplating on getting involved in sports would be to just do it. If it’s something you legitimately want to do, then you should go for it. It’s more than likely going to be good fun and also probably a good method of exercise at the same time.

Q: What is your most memorable game? Tell me about it.

A: My most memorable game of golf would be last year in Paradise Valley. It was the game where I shot a par on one of the holes, which was a first for me and I was pretty satisfied with it as I was just starting out around that time. I’ve had much better games than that, but that was definitely the most memorable.

Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters (names and ages)? Who are your role models?

A: I have an older sister named Jess, and younger brother named Gavin. As for role models, I think my mom and dad are pretty good examples of what I should somewhat strive to achieve.

Q: If you could change one thing about Armijo (students, facilities, staff, etc.), what would it be and why?

A: If I could change one thing about Armijo, it’d probably have to be the workload. I know it’s pretty basic, but a lot of times it’s really hard to do any of my hobbies and play sports when I have too much homework.
