Armijo defeats Vanden despite missing players

Varsity: 2-0 Win (5-2-0) JV: 2-1 Win (4-1-2)

The ball was moving fast throughout the game.

Varsity: It was a tough game for Armijo and Vanden on Wedensday, January 26. Both teams were down starting players due to injury and illness. The Royals may not have been at their best but still wanted that win and, after a lot of back and forth, they were able to get the first goal 15 minutes in. Senior Julian Jimenez had a killer shot just outside the 18 box that dropped in right over the keeper and into the net.

Play continued strong with a few breakaways by the Vanden Vikings that were shut down quickly by Armijo’s center defenders Andres Orozco and Antonio Pena. The Royals ended half up one goal and needing to discuss a few points to improve their attack.

The boys rallied to start strong and, within the first 10 minutes, Junior Esteban Carcamo was able to sink in a goal off an assist by Senior Captain Alonzo Martin. Vanden again put up a strong effort and just missed out on a few goals of their own, but were shut down by Senior Keeper Jonathon Harrington.

It was an overall good game by both teams. Vanden’s Varsity team always ends their game with their heads still up, showing great sportsmanship towards their opponents and their head coach, and is always positive with good words to share. Armijo has a few things to shift around to prepare for our next match up at Will C Wood on Friday, January 28.

Junior Varsity (JV): The Royals were coming into the game against a 1st place and undefeated Vanden. The game started with Vanden applying constant pressure and getting chances. Vanden was able to get a goal to make it 1-0 in the first half. In the second half, it was back and forth. Armijo picked it up more and were creating a lot more plays. Edwing Saucedo took a corner kick and Dawson Le scored with a header to tie the game 1-1. About 10 minutes later, in the last four minutes of the game, Jovani Jimenez scored a long range shot to set the game at 2-1. Armijo was able to contain the last minutes and kept the victory at home.
