Varsity Royals win 1st game
On Friday night, September 3, Armijo welcomed alumni to a pregame tailgate party and our first victory of the season, defeating Mission (San Francisco) 12-0.
The fans brought a ton of energy through a defensive struggle of a game. By half-time, the game was scoreless, with each team punting a few times and gaining around 70 yards of offense. The highlight for the Royals was blocking a close-range Mission field goal attempt after an impressive goal line stand.
Armijo’s game-changing drive happened at the end of the third quarter that featured two 3rd-down conversions. One was a 7-yard pass from Eddie Concepcion Garcia to Dameion Regelado and a 14-yard rush from Keshaun Williams to get the ball all the way to the 1-yard line. On the first play of the 4th quarter, Quarterback Eddie Concepcion Garcia punched it in behind a great push from the offensive line to take the lead 6-0.
Mission had the ball three more times with chances to tie or take the lead, but the Royals defense stood strong. Isiah Medina and Jayson Hubbard led the way with six tackles each during the game. Guy Fortson and Elijah Craft chipped in four tackles each as well to post the impressive shutout for the Royals.
The final score of the game came on a 37-yard touchdown pass as the final horn sounded, which was another connection between Concepcion and Regalado.Regalado led all receivers with three catches for 53 yards.
Keshaun Williams led the offense with 81 yards on 2 catches and 16 carries.
On September 10, Armijo has an away game at Woodland, but we look forward to seeing everyone at the next home game against Natomas on September 24.
