Varsity football succumbs to Eagles, JV soars
Varsity: 35-6 with JV: 16-14
Armijo took to the field in nearly two years.
On Friday, August 20, the Armijo Royals football program returned to its first full capacity home football game since the fall of 2019 and the support from the crowd was appreciated by the players and coaching staff.
The Junior Varsity (JV) team was led on offense by quarterback Deonte White, who scrambled his way to a thrilling comeback victory in the 4th quarter. The Royals won 16-14.
Defensive lineman Jason Hubbard keyed the comeback with an important sack for a safety late in the fourth quarter that gave us two points and the ball for the eventual winning possession.
In the Varsity game, we competed for the first half, being only outgained by 17 yards, but ran out of gas in the second half, eventually falling 35-6.
Offensively, running back David Singleton led the charge with our lone touchdown and 127 total yards from 2 catches and 13 carries. Kaiba Washington contributed five catches for 24 yards, and Guy Fortson had the big play of the game with a 35 yard catch.
Ziair McElvaine made a real heads-up play to lead to Armijo’s lone score. Following an Armijo fumble on fourth and one on the one-yard line, El Camino looked poised to try to return the ball 99 yards for a score. McElvaine proceeded to rip the ball from El Camino defender, gaining Armijo possession and a new set of downs. The Royals scored on the very next play from five yards out.
Defensively, Isiah Medina led the defense with eight tackles from the linebacker position. Keshaun Williams snagged an important interception as well.
Even though the scoreline for our varsity contest may appear like a continuation of seasons past, we feel that there is growth in accountability and work ethic in the classroom and on the field. We appreciate the support from everyone who showed up and we can’t wait to impress you in our five future home games this season.
