On August 21, the world cares for animals
International Homeless Animals’ Day – August 21
International Homeless Animals’ Day was created in 1992 by ISAR. It is always celebrated on the third Saturday of August, which is August 21 this year.
This day was made to bring awareness to the millions of animals who are homeless and/or left to be abandoned. The International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) has been very involved with this and have created activities to help shed more light on this cause, activities including candlelight vigils, spay/neuter clinics, microchip clinics, blessings of the animals, and speeches given by council members, local veterinarians, humane officers and shelter personnel. Some other activities also include rallies, dog walks, live music, ceremonies, raffles, and games (Dogtime) .
There are about 7.6 million homeless animals, with 3.9 million dogs and 3.4 million cats. Stray animals are a problem because many of them get diseases causing them to act out and sometimes attack random people. Stray animals can cause other problems, too. They sometimes randomly cross busy streets and cause car crashes, for instance.
To help these animals locally, it is possible to donate money or supplies to the SPCA, the Animal Care Center or a rescue organization. Donate some supplies (leashes, collars, treats, food, hygiene supplies, etc.). If you are over 18, you might consider becoming a volunteer to help out the animals or even become a foster home to help bring in these animals and then give them back when they have finally found a forever home.
