Save money, save the world
National Thrift Shop Day – August 17
Trying to find affordable and sustainable shopping options isn’t always easy but this August 17, celebrate one shopping alternative that is often overlooked: thrift shopping.
Thrift shops, also known as charity and second-hand shops, sell a wide range of used products from clothing to furniture (National Thrift Shop Day). The gently used products are donated by the community and sold at reasonable prices available to anyone.
Thrift shops are great for many reasons, one being that they greatly benefit the community and organizations. Some shops are run by charities, like the Salvation Army, and raise money to fund their cause (National Thrift Shop Day). Thrift shops are also helpful to those who have a lower income and could benefit from affordable items.
What many don’t know about thrift shopping is that it’s one way to participate in sustainable shopping. It reduces air pollution, energy usage, additions to landfills, and ocean pollution (How Thrift Shopping Is Being Kind To The Earth). This is due to the fact the products are being used once again instead of being thrown out or producing another. While sustainable brands are usually expensive this is one simple way to help the environment.
This National Thrift Shop Day, remember that your local shop is a great way to dress for less. Some shops include Goodwill in Fairfield, Savers in Vacaville, and Opportunity House in Vacaville. You can even celebrate by donating some of your gently used items to your local thrift shop.
