They deserve our gratitude for the time they spend with us.

Fathers’ Day is a day where we take the time to celebrate all the amazing fathers. During this day giving a card, a hug or even a thank you can go a long way.

Fathers’ Day was first officially celebrated in 1910 in an event organized by Sonora Smart Dodd. The first Fathers’ Day celebration was held in Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Sonora´s father was a Civil War veteran, a single parent who raised six children by himself, and she decided that he should be honored for his service.

Fathers’ Day did not become the holiday it is today right away, but it did gain popularity over the years. According to Almanac.com, in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed an order stating that Fathers’ Day would be celebrated on the third Sunday in June. A few years later, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed an order which would later be passed by Congress which resulted in Fathers’ Day becoming a national holiday. This year, it will be celebrated on Sunday, June 20.

As with Mothers’ Day in May, Fathers’ Day is a time of giving, both gifts and time.

If you were ever wondering how you can give back to your father during Fathers’ Day, well according to wilstar.com, ”Fathers are usually given gifts in the realm of home improvement, electronics, and outdoor tools. There are no official ways to celebrate Father’s Day, but many children also celebrate with a phone call, meal out, or a family gathering honoring all fathers within an extended family. “
